Carpenter Ants

What are they?

The red and black carpenter ants are among the most prevalent species in Canada. The red carpenter ant features a dark brownish-black body complemented by a reddish-brown upper segment, while the black carpenter ant is uniformly dark brownish-black.

Carpenter ants range in size from 6 to 25 mm (0.24 to 1 inch) in length. Their bodies are distinctly segmented into three parts, with a slender waist that separates the upper and lower sections. Their antennae are bent and segmented, and adult males and females possess wings during the mating season.

Should I be concerned?

Carpenter ants are notorious for their propensity to inflict damage on wooden structures. They can be bothersome and may harm your home while foraging for food. Their diet includes both plant and animal matter, with a preference for insects, small invertebrates, and sweet substances secreted by aphids and other insects. Additionally, they consume proteins and sugary foods present in and around residences.

These ants construct nests by burrowing into wood, creating tunnels known as galleries. Rather than consuming the wood, they discard it from the nest as sawdust-like particles called frass, a mix of wood shavings and fecal matter.

Carpenter ants thrive in large colonies comprising hundreds of sterile female workers, several reproductive males and females, and one or more queens. When a portion of an established colony infiltrates a nearby building, it may establish a smaller satellite colony or multiple colonies within.

How do I know if I have a problem?

Outdoors, carpenter ants inhabit dead tree trunks, stumps, logs, or even beneath fallen logs and stones. They also burrow into sound wood.

Indoors, their preference for damp, decaying wood can indicate moisture issues or deteriorating wooden structures. Besides tunneling through building trim, wooden steps, and window sills, ant colonies can nest within homes without attacking the main structural timbers, utilizing hollow spaces such as wall voids, attics, and hollow doors.

Carpenter ants can enter homes through various means:

• Windows

• By burrowing into foundations

• Through heating ducts and air conditioners

• Via power or telephone cables

• Where tree branches or other vegetation touch the house

• Wooden structures attached to homes (such as porches and sheds)

• Firewood brought into the house

Untreated, carpenter ants can cause significant damage to the structure of your home, business, or cottage.
